Democrats,
Today, the conservative justices of the Supreme Court gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in a 6-3 ruling, allowing racial discrimination against communities of color in redistricting across the United States. The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais makes Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act impossible to enforce, giving Republicans in states, counties, and cities the opportunity to dilute the voting power of racial minorities to the point of making them voiceless in districts where Republicans have the ability to do so.
Today’s decision allows Republicans to dilute the voting power of communities of color to the point of silencing them, and that is the point. Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to allow Republicans to disenfranchise voters of color, and the Court granted him his wish. Sadly, this turns back the clock on much of the hard work of the Civil Rights Movement and our nation’s historic fights for justice and equity.
In New Mexico, we can count on our Democratic leaders to continue ensuring that our diverse communities are fairly represented in the our state's political districts. But any number of Republican candidates running in New Mexico this year could be counted on to back maps that give communities of color less of a voice, making our work to elect Democrats all the more important in light of today’s decision.
Please support the Democratic Party of NM today. Today's decision shows that elections have consequences and it's up to all of us to make sure we elect Democrats who will fight back against Trumpian efforts to unfairly influence elections.

Donald Trump and the GOP have made it clear they are willing to cheat, intimidate, and silence in the midterms as their approval craters and Americans suffer from skyrocketing costs and reject Trump’s boondoggle war in Iran. Today’s decision go hand in hand with Trump and Republicans’ plans to rig congressional maps and eliminate fair districts for Black and Latino voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. We all have to do our part.
Thank you,
NM Democrats HQ team
