Dear Friends and Supporters

The first 2 weeks of August have seen MPs scurry away on their summer holidays and Brexit negotiations with the EU have taken a slight break, starting again next week on Tuesday August 18^th. However, this week we have seen the UK’s Chief Brexit Negotiator, David Frost and the new Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin come out saying they believe a Trade Deal can be secured between the UK and the EU in a matter of weeks!

While we welcome such good news, we do so very tentatively. As we mentioned in our last e-Bulletin, David Frost recently said he expects the UK to win 60% of its negotiating objectives with the EU. So, if we are close to a trade deal, where are the other 40% we wanted – have they been ‘lost’ or just ‘dumped’. If so, this sounds like a deal we don’t want any part of. (We have written to Frost, Gove and Boris to find out what’s in the 40%!)

This Government MUST NOT sell our sovereignty down the river in exchange for some lower tariffs as part of a dodgy unequal trade deal. A ‘Brexit in Name Only’ (BRINO) is NOT Brexit. As we all know, the EU Referendum vote for Brexit over 4 years ago, was about more than our economic relationship with the EU. It was about ‘Taking Back Control’ of our entire country and everything included within it. Walking away from trade negotiations and trading with the EU on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms from the end of this year, is far more preferable than a bad deal. Remember, the phrase used so much by Theresa May to ‘CON’ us? It still rings true - even though she clearly did not believe it herself: ‘No-Deal is better than a BAD Deal!’

Before I continue - and this request again is really important if we are to continue our fight – especially now we are hopefully nearing the end of this struggle: Get Britain Out is very, appreciative of the donations we have received so far, but even now, they are unfortunately reducing. There is still lots of work to be done and to keep going, we urgently need your help for these last 4½ months. We need a REAL Brexit instead of a BRINO – even if this means we are OUT on WTO Terms – and NOT A BAD DEAL!

For as long as we are here, Get Britain Out will keep on trying to get the Government’s attention - and winning victories for Brexiteers.
I do understand not all of you can afford to donate, but if we fail to keep up the pressure on this Government, we may find ourselves tied to the EU indefinitely - or with BRINO!

ACTION POINT:
After our last e-Bulletin, many of you asked me to produce more template letters so you can write to your MPs to express your concern.
I have drafted a new letter which you can send to your own MP, questioning the lack of information the Government is giving us on what is to be included in any Trade Deal with the EU - and asking them to support the UK walking away from talks and trading with the EU on WTO terms.

All you have to do is print off the letter, fill in your MP’s name, the date and your name and address (very important as they won’t even read it otherwise) - and then send it over to your MP by post, or drop it into your Constituency office. You might also like to request a meeting with your MP while you are there, as is your right!

Outside negotiations with the EU, the Department for International Trade (DIT) has taken up our call for an active and aggressive approach to negotiations with other countries during the Parliamentary Summer Recess. It now appears a Comprehensive Free Trade Deal with Japan is on the verge of completion. The rumoured contents of the deal already goes beyond the one Japan recently agreed with the EU, and demonstrates exactly why we made the right choice to Leave the EU. Now we can pursue trade deals with countries tailored specifically to our needs, instead of appeasing 27 other Member States. This focus on the UK does mean specific challenges. For example, these talks with Japan are apparently currently stalling over the tariffs paid on Stilton blue cheese. This is a dispute however, which shouldn’t mean there won’t be a trade deal soon.

To demonstrate the full advantages of negotiating directly with Japan, Get Britain Out has put together a comparison table of the important parts of the UK’s deal so far in comparison to the EU’s deal.


The DIT has also been active in negotiations with the US recently, with progress apparently going well, but we are still not proceeding as fast as we should be. Secretary of State for International Trade, Liz Truss has said there is no time limit to trade discussions with the US, but this week we saw the UK once again included in tariff threats from the US against the EU. The longer we go on without a trade deal with our strongest ally, the longer we risk being tied into these tariff wars between the US and the EU.

Plus - despite President Trump’s recent victory in getting a massive peace deal agreed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates – named ‘The Abraham Accord’ - Trump may not be the President much longer, with the US Presidential election looming in November. His opponent Joe Biden has already said he would prioritise a US-EU deal over a US-UK deal. So, time really is important - and Liz Truss must really get a move on to make sure a deal is close to completion before the end of the year!

Back in the UK we have now officially entered a recession following the COVID-19 lockdown. However, there are already signs of hope with a ‘V-shaped recovery’ looking likely after the UK economy grew by 8.7% in June - this was faster than the EU economy and others around the world. This is a trend which we must continue and enhance - something which will only be possible if the opportunities of Brexit are fully embraced. At present, most UK businesses don't trade with the EU - in fact many only trade within 10 miles of their base - yet all of them have had to put up with every EU directive and regulation - regardless of the relevance to their own business. Free from this regulatory burden, domestic businesses should be free to innovate and operate at a higher level. This will be crucial in the current economic environment.

What’s more, a huge amount of the UK’s exports already go to countries outside the EU, yet they currently have to comply with the EU’s relationship with those countries. Prime examples include trade with the US and fast-growing economies like India. Exports to these countries, and many more, are slapped with high tariffs - especially on goods which the UK specialises in, such as component parts for technology and advanced mechanics used for cars, especially for the global Formula1 racing industry, worth more than £10 billion a year to the UK economy.

Our Financial Services industry comes under these same restrictions because of the EU’s backward-looking approach to the global economy. Outside the EU, with new relationships with the fast-growing economies in the world, UK businesses will be able to expand further than ever before. These are fields in which the UK is already a world leader.

However, we are still being held back from unleashing our full potential. The only way to achieve this is if the Government sticks to its commitments and delivers a true Brexit - not a BRINO which would only scratch the surface of ambition and leave us shackled to the EU for decades to come. Our future is in our own hands now. We must grasp the opportunities and stride forward on a path towards a strong economic recovery, which continues to outperform our EU competitors.
