Dear John,
Throughout this pandemic, Americans have taken steps, big and small, to slow the spread of the coronavirus and protect their loved ones and vulnerable community members. Those sacrifices have taken courage and determination -- critical qualities that our veterans mastered long before this crisis hit.
Throughout their service, veterans stood up to protect us and the values that we cherish. We can’t forget about these brave and dedicated individuals, especially during one of the most difficult and turbulent times in our history.
I’m committed to being a consistent advocate for veterans when it comes to my work in the U.S. Senate. Most recently, that work has included pushing the VA for strong coronavirus safety measures and to supporting a nationwide coronavirus testing program that would give all VA facilities essential tools -- like testing kits and personal protective equipment -- to respond to the public health emergency.
In addition, I successfully pushed Senate leadership to include $150 million in Congress’ Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act for VA hospitals, nursing homes, and domiciliary facilities in state homes. This funding has helped these facilities take important health and safety precautions for veterans and VA personnel, saving lives during this crisis.
I also cosponsored bipartisan legislation -- which was signed into law this spring -- to authorize the VA to continue to provide GI benefits through this year for veterans whose classes have transitioned to online instruction due to the pandemic. We made a promise to support veterans in their pursuit of a higher education, and as we come together to build a foundation for a strong and prosperous future, we need to keep that promise.
Our veterans overcame unimaginable challenges for us. It’s on us to make sure we do our part by giving them the support they need to weather the pandemic. I’m going to keep fighting for that support.
All my best,
Jeff
