Updates from the Front Lines

For over four decades, Sea Shepherd has fought to protect every living being in our oceans, from the smallest fish to the largest mammal. While we have made great strides defending our oceans, there is still so much more work to be done.

For The Sea Turtles: Operation Jairo

After 12 weeks, Operation Jairo 5 has come to an end. Our crew patrolled the beaches of Padre Ramos, Nicaragua in search for nesting sea turtles. Unfortunately, they only encountered less than 10 nests over a 3-month period. Of the seven species of sea turtles that exist, six are currently endangered. These animals help maintain a healthy ocean ecosystem. To learn more and see how you can get involved, please go to our campaign site and watch our latest campaign video here.

For The Wild Salmon: Operation Virus Hunter

Fish farming is not only killing off wild salmon, but it is violating the constitutionally entrenched rights to fish and food of First Nations. Sea Shepherd is humbled and honored to stand behind the many First Nations peoples leading this fight. Learn more about the First Nations’ fight to defend their salmon, their waters, and their rights, here.

For The Vaquita Porpoise: Operation Milagro

Sea Shepherd is back in the Upper Gulf of California in preparation for Operation Milagro VI with The M/V Sharpie being fitted to carry out a very important vaquita spotting expedition. With approximately 15 vaquitas left, there is no time to waste or the endangered porpoise could disappear within a year. Sea Shepherd is collaborating with leading scientists from the USA and Mexico and experts from CONANP (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Marinas Protegidas) to show the world this critically endangered porpoise is fighting for survival. This expedition will allow scientists to gather photographic data to be able to properly identify and track the critically endangered porpoises - information crucial for their conservation and net retrieval operations. Sea Shepherd is grateful to be able to participate in this important collaboration and is committed to protecting the vaquita porpoise from extinction. For The Pilot Whales: Operation Bloody Fjords

Hundreds of pilot whales are slaughtered every year in the Danish Faroe Islands. When a pod is spotted, locals drive the animals to the nearest bay and into its shallow waters. They are then dragged ashore with ropes and a blásturongul (a type of blunt gaff-hook rammed into the whale’s blowhole) before they are massacred with knives. This year, Sea Shepherd has already recorded the murder of 536 long finned pilot whales and 7 Atlantic white-sided dolphins.
