I’m truly honored to share the news that I am transitioning into a new role at Critical Resistance – as the National Campaigns Director! JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Critical Resistance (CR), a national grassroots organization working to end the prison industrial complex (PIC), seeks a National Media and Communications Director to work with CR members and allies to develop and implement communication plans and strategies to support our projects and campaigns; increase CR’s national impact and profile; and amplify the concept and practice of PIC abolition nationally.

Position Description:

The Media and Communications Director will work with Critical Resistance members, staffers, and allies to develop, plan, and implement communications and media activities to gain national and local coverage for Critical Resistance and its activities. This position will also facilitate communication among CR members organization-wide and within CR’s coalitions. This Co-Director position will work with the Campaigns Director in supervising the CR Programs Team staff. As one of three National Co-Directors, it will also work with the Campaigns and Development CoDirectors in maintaining the overall health and strategy of the organization.

Location:
Position is based in Critical Resistance’s National Office in Oakland, CA. Regular travel will be required, approximately six times a year to chapter cities or movement events (conferences, planning sessions, etc) outside of Oakland. Note: Due to COVID-19, CR office is closed with all staff working remotely, and national staff have halted travel across cities at least through the end of 2020. We are open to considering candidates who are not currently in Oakland, CA, but would be willing to relocate once COVID-19 is no longer a risk and we are able to return to working from our office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Grassroots Organizing, Campaigns, and Projects
* Work alongside staff and members to participate in CR campaigns and coalitions to contribute strategic media and communications work: organizing press conferences, attending rallies or protests, etc.
* Support and coordinate generation of press releases, statements, fact sheets, PSAs, and other press materials
* Call reporters to pitch stories, and field calls from the media. Serve as point-of-contact for media inquiries and forward reporters’ questions to pertinent people
* Develop and maintain local chapter and national media contacts database with members, build relationships with media contacts
* Conduct research to develop fact sheets, talking points, media relations, and programmatic materials as needed
* Participate in organizational programming as needed such as: fundraising, attending rallies or protests; participating in planning for CR conferences; working with CR chapters on local organizing
* Participate in The Abolitionist Editorial Collective, a national working group that creates and distributes our prisoner newspaper
* Additional duties, as needed


Membership Support and Leadership Development
* Train, facilitate, and support CR members to develop and implement media strategies, including strategic planning, materials development, regular written and digital communications and updates, and maintaining social media accounts
* Support chapters in facilitating bi-annual work planning retreats
* Visit chapters regularly to assist with internal and external communication as well as networking with media resources in their area
* Support CR members to coordinate, implement, and publicize press events and other chapter activities
* Maintain, develop, and use workshops and training materials to develop and increase members’ strategic media and communication skills
* Support members’ growth and leadership in the organization, both through one-on-one and chapter-wide development plans


Organizational Development and Administration
* Represent and promote CR at meetings, conferences, and other public settings
* Maintain CR’s website
* Administer and maintain CR’s social media platforms
* Participate in organizational planning and programming as needed such as: fundraising, attending and planning for CR conferences, convenings, and events
* Participate in decision making on different levels of the organization – within chapters, among staff, and in local and national working groups
* Co-supervise the CR Programs Team staff by collectively reviewing workplans and setting goals, supporting staff development and in meeting benchmarks
* Work alongside Co-Directors and other national staff to develop and implement the organization’s national strategic plan
* Office administrative tasks with other staff, including answering phone calls, maintaining office space, and other relevant duties


REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
* Developing and coordinating successful media campaigns and communications strategies
* Understanding of and commitment to prison industrial complex abolition
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Training and group facilitation – developing facilitation plans, agendas, and materials, prepping participants, facilitating work planning sessions, supporting follow up tasks.
* Ability to balance multiple responsibilities well, to set priorities, and follow work plans
* Willingness and ability to seek out relevant work and allies for building partnerships and coalitions
* Supporting interns and volunteers
* Working with computers including updating websites, email groups and listservs, word processing, and database management
* Willingness to travel
* Public Speaking


DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:
* Ability to speak and write in Spanish a plus
* Experience in a national organization
* Experience working in an organization with volunteer members, and developing volunteer leadership
* Supervisory experience within a community-based organization
* Experience with organizational finances
* Experience with social media platforms
* Graphic design skills (Adobe products, Canva, etc)
* Experience creating or supporting regular publications (newsletters, newspapers, journals, etc)


CANDIDATE RECRUITMENT:

COMPENSATION:
Salary is $58,270, with six weeks paid vacation, and an expansive benefits package. Travel is covered for staff while on the road, and a per diem is provided. CR is also providing financial support for tech needs during COVID19, as staff are working from home.

This is a permanent position. However, the starting contract agreement is for the first six months to ensure the hire is a mutually good fit for Critical Resistance and the person hired. We ask for a minimum two-year commitment.
