Y’all.

We shared a victory with the community in Austin yesterday. After years of work with community leaders like Councilman Greg Casar, and social justice organizations Austin Justice Coalition, Texas Appleseed, and Grassroots Leadership, the Austin City Council voted to invest in us . [[link removed]] The Austin City Council unanimously approved the $4.2 billion budget which includes a $150 million cut to the Austin Police Department.

Since last year, I have served as Chair of Austin's Task Force on Gun Violence, which advises the city of Austin on potential actions they can take to reduce gun violence and improve existing programs and resources. Part of the proposal voted on yesterday will invest $1.4 million dollars a year to support a public health approach to gun violence, which will include an Office of Violence Prevention, and a community mapping of what technical assistance is needed.

This is a first, but historic step to provide essential community resources to the people closest to the pain of everyday gun violence.

We aren’t stopping our work in communities across the country now. Please join us next week on August 20th for our National Digital Action Training (sign up here [[link removed]] ). We'll talk through CJAF’s mission, fights we're taking on with people like you at the local, state and national level, & digital opportunities to get involved so you can bring victories like this to your community!

We need you in this fight now more than ever. Another world is possible.

In solidarity,

Amber
