EGLE announces 2026 Community Energy Management Program grants available to help local governments and communities reduce energy costs and emissions

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is announcing the release of the *Fiscal Year 2026 Community Energy Management Program Request for Proposals (RFP)*, a grant opportunity designed to help local governments and community organizations improve energy management, reduce costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Local governments and community-serving organizations play a key role in advancing energy efficiency and clean energy solutions but often face limited resources and capacity. This program provides funding and technical support to help communities plan, implement, and expand energy-related initiatives that deliver long-term cost savings and environmental benefits.

The program will support a wide range of activities, including energy planning, benchmarking, energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy deployment, fleet electrification, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Eligible applicants include local and tribal governments, nonprofit organizations, and other public service entities located in Michigan.

“This program empowers communities across Michigan to take meaningful action on energy and climate while reducing costs and improving public services,” said EGLE Director Phil Roos. “By supporting local energy planning and implementation, we’re helping communities build resilience, strengthen infrastructure, and create a more sustainable future for residents across the state.”

Program Focus and Priorities

The Community Energy Management Program prioritizes projects that improve energy efficiency, expand renewable energy, and strengthen local capacity for long-term energy management.

Priority will be given to projects that:


* Advance energy planning, benchmarking, and data-driven decision-making
* Reduce energy waste and lower operating costs
* Increase access to renewable energy and clean technologies
* Support fleet electrification and EV charging infrastructure
* Promote community engagement, outreach, and workforce development
* Align with the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan

Projects that integrate multiple strategies—such as combining energy efficiency upgrades with renewable energy or transportation electrification—are strongly encouraged.

Funding Details

EGLE expects approximately *$750,000* in total funding will be available through this competitive grant program. Individual awards will range from *$5,000 to $50,000*.

Unlike some other grant opportunities, a cost match is not required, though applicants are encouraged to demonstrate additional investment or leveraged resources where possible.

All awards will be issued on a reimbursement basis, requiring recipients to pay project costs upfront and submit documentation for reimbursement. Funds must be expended by *August 31, 2027*.

Eligible projects include:


* Development of energy plans, policies, and ordinances
* Energy benchmarking and audits (including ASHRAE Level I or II)
* Energy efficiency upgrades in buildings and facilities
* Renewable energy system planning and installation
* Fleet electrification and alternative fuel vehicle purchases
* Electric vehicle charging infrastructure installation
* Community outreach, education, and workforce development initiatives

Application Timeline and Requirements

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted or the application deadline is reached. Awards will be held on a first-come, first-served basis, aligned with program priorities.

Applicants must submit a complete proposal, including an online application, budget form, and required supporting documentation.
