You support Poynter. We support facts and the free press.
As a Poynter supporter, you’re receiving this newsletter each Friday so we can keep you well informed about the lifesaving work we’re doing to fight against misinformation around the world and help journalists deliver news you trust. Poynter is:
Providing you thoughtful perspectives on U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris
History was made this week when Kamala Harris was chosen by Joe Biden to run as Vice President in the upcoming presidential election. While her career as California’s Attorney General, U.S. senator and former presidential candidate have made her well known to many, there is still much to learn about her. Our PolitFact team shares with you the story of her early life and political career.

How will the media cover Harris ([link removed]) over these next three months? Poynter senior media writer Tom Jones shares his perspective. And we address some questions that may be on your mind: If Harris is also of South Asian descent, why does the press only label her “Black”?

And if Biden can’t serve his full term, can Harris legally become president ([link removed])?
Empowering media leaders
Speaking of dynamic female leaders, this week Poynter proudly announced the second of three classes selected for our sixth annual Leadership Academy for Women in Media. [link removed]
Through the academy, this elite group of 30 diverse women will experience significant personal and professional transformation that will no doubt improve the news and media you rely on, including The New York Times, NPR, USA Today, HuffPost, Los Angeles Times and the Tampa Bay Times.
“This is an impressive class of top-level decision-makers, including publishers, executive and senior editors, and directors,” said Doris Truong, Poynter’s director of training and diversity. “I am proud Poynter can bring these leaders together to build confidence, capacity and connection at one of the most challenging times in history. They will lead their news organizations — and our industry — forward.”
Meet our incredible academy members!

Hosting a conversation with NPR’s Public Editor

“Absolutely LOVED the conversation today! Thank you so much! Wow! I had no idea of the true scope of all that Poynter does.”
I was thoroughly delighted to hear these words from a Poynter donor who attended our recent Poynter Perks conversation between our supporters and Poynter President Neil Brown on the importance of local journalism.
Please join me later this month for our next Q&A! Poynter Senior Vice President Kelly McBride will share with you what she’s learned on the job so far in her role as the public editor for NPR. Have a specific question for Kelly now? Email it to me (
[email protected]) and your question could be at the front of the line.
These events are hosted exclusively for Poynter donors to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the work we're doing to make good journalism better, thanks to your generous support. This gathering will be held on Thursday, August 27 at 4 p.m. Eastern. Please register to attend! [link removed]
P.S. I shared this with you last week, but it’s worth mentioning again.
Poynter is helping older citizens protect themselves against online misinformation. Beginning next month, our MediaWise for Seniors program is offering a free online course of four 90-minute sessions that will teach seniors how to tell what’s true and false on social media platforms like Facebook. Participants will get to learn fact-checking techniques directly from Poynter senior faculty Al Tompkins. The August 24 deadline is fast approaching so click here to learn more and apply!
