I am advancing a comprehensive surface transportation reauthorization this year. The bipartisan measure will focus on improving safety and strengthening connectivity for commuters, transit riders, and freight movement.

This month, I also visited New Leaf in Oak Harbor to learn more about their affordable housing initiative.

New Leaf, as an AbilityOne program, provides an important service here in Oak Harbor, especially to the operations at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. These kinds of nonprofit programs under AbilityOne provide these services all over the country at a value to the taxpayer, and it is important that we keep supporting AbilityOne in Congress.

My deepest condolences remain with the families of the 67 lives lost in the DCA mid-air tragedy.

This month, the House overwhelmingly passed the Airspace Location and Enhanced Risk Transparency (ALERT) Act of 2026. This bill is part of a comprehensive legislative response I co-led in the wake of the tragic 2025 mid-air collision at DCA.

Its passage is the next step in delivering on Congress's safety commitment to the flying public and acting on the NTSB's 50 safety recommendations. I look forward to working with my Senate counterparts to get a final bill to the President's desk.

I will never stop thinking of the families, friends, and loved ones of the 67 people who lost their lives last year. And I will never stop working to perfect flight safety standards.

While there was a lot of work done this month, there is still a lot more to do. I am committed to improving the lives of everyone in Northwest Washington and protecting our shared values.
