'A Quiet Army in Himself': Trump Judges are Giving Clarence Thomas the Judicial 'Troops' to Remake Constitutional Law

As Americans call on lawmakers to take action in response to the most recent spate of mass killings, it isn’t just the National Rifle Association and its bought-and-paid-for legislators standing in the way. It’s also a federal judiciary that is being packed at a record pace with judges who share Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s once-lonely radicalism on the Second Amendment – and on decades of constitutional law that undergird much of what the federal government now does.

IN FOCUS: The Trump Administration's Continued Attacks on Immigrant Communities

For decades, white supremacists have strategically driven their racism into the political mainstream. Under the guise of politics, they stoked fear and division to normalize hate in the Right’s rhetoric and policies – and set the tone for Donald Trump’s rise to power. From day one, Trump’s racism has informed his administration’s immigration policies. His border wall, family separation policy, threats of mass deportation, attacks on DACA and other protection programs, and radicalization of CBP and ICE endanger our American values of equality and justice for all.

PFAW has recently launched a new campaign to continue fighting back in order to support fair immigration policies so that every immigrant, whether they are green card holders, asylum seekers, or undocumented, is treated fairly and has the opportunity to succeed.

#VoteTheCourts2020: Joe Biden, Amy Klobuchar, and John Delaney Discuss Their Ideal Judicial Nominees

With the 2020 presidential campaign season in full swing, PFAW continues to urge presidential primary candidates to voice their plans to nominate fair-minded constitutionalists to our federal courts. The importance of this cannot be overstated as Trump’s narrow-minded, elitist judges are being confirmed at an unprecedented rate, endangering the courts’ ability to protect all people – not just the wealthy and powerful.

We are happy to see that former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Rep. John Delaney, D-Md., have each recently spoken about the importance of the courts, the qualities they would look for when nominating judges and the steps they would take to rebalance the court system.

Lindsey Graham Opens a New Frontier of Lawlessness

With the complicity of his fellow Republicans, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham led the nation to a new frontier of lawlessness this month, taking a major step in the dismantling of our democracy and the rule of law. Despite the unambiguous rules of the committee that required him to hold over a vote on his partisan and cruel immigration bill until the next meeting upon Democrats’ request, he ignored their request and held a vote anyway.

White Supremacist Terrorism and the History of Anti-Latino Racism in Texas

Before he opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas on August 3 and killed 22 people in a hate-fueled massacre, the gunman posted a screed online that reportedly stated his motive: “This is an attack in response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

In response, thousands of Americans shared their devastation and outrage over the shooting, which many said marked a new low in the Trump era. And while it’s true that Trump deserves ire for his anti-Latino rhetoric and incitements of violence, this attack – and the gunman’s fear over the “Hispanic invasion” – isn’t just about Trump’s racism or his cruel anti-immigrant policies. It’s also about the centuries of anti-Latino and white supremacist violence in America’s journey toward greatness, especially in Texas.

The Court’s decisions during this term pointed to worrying signs for the future.
