You and I have backed U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson into a corner.

He desperately wants to renew FISA Section 702 – with NO changes at all – for anywhere from 18 months to 5 years.

But he doesn’t have the votes to make that happen . . . yet.

So while Mike Johnson is sweating it out and twisting arms and cutting deals, the statists are desperately pulling every trick in the book to force a clean extension through.

On Thursday, Johnson proposed reauthorization of Section 702 with a few tweaks: minimal new oversight and penalties for abuses of the spy authority.

But his latest version still doesn’t have a warrant requirement and mostly just restates current law.

Now Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has stepped into the fray and introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate for a “clean” extension of Section 702 for 3 more years.

No changes. No warrant requirement.

This is not unexpected, given Cotton is firmly in the statists’ pocket.

These two competing bills are expected to hit their respective floors early this week.

Which means you and I need to fight 702 renewal in both the House and the Senate simultaneously.

It won’t be long before legislators shift their focus to the midterm election.

But in the meantime, you and I have this major battle in front of us.

This week, we’ll have to get the phones ringing off the hook on both sides of the Capitol.

Our message is clear: No warrant? No deal!

Get ready for a busy week.
