The event gave Members and staff the opportunity to better understand how these tools can be misused by terrorist organizations and other threats facing our homeland.  As Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Andrew remains focused on ensuring Congress stays ahead of evolving threats and gives law enforcement and national security professionals the tools they need to keep Americans safe. Read More ANDREW IN THE NEWS GOP puts off vote to relax U.S. Endangered Species Act after Andrew Garbarino objects A Long Island congressman said he helped persuade GOP House leaders to abruptly yank a Wednesday vote on Republican legislation that critics say would gravely weaken the federal Endangered Species Act. Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) said he was among Republicans not backing the bill, explaining in a statement, "I worked directly with House leadership today to ensure this vote did not reach the floor because of the concerns it raised for Long Island." Newsday reported this week Long Island species that benefit from the Endangered Species Act include the rufa red knot, a migratory bird that rests on local beaches during its long migrations; roseate terns; four sea turtle species; and piping plovers. More generally, other species like the iconic humpback whale and bald eagle have flourished under the protections of the act, enacted in 1973. "Protecting our environment and wildlife will always be a priority for the communities I represent," Garbarino added in his statement. Read More WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Honoring Suffolk County's Finest Andrew was proud to provide congressional certificates and flags recognizing several members of the Suffolk County Police Department who were honored by the Suffolk County PBA for their bravery and professionalism during a dangerous incident in Bay Shore.  These officers faced immediate gunfire while executing a warrant tied to an active murder investigation. In an extremely dangerous and chaotic situation, they showed discipline and commitment to protecting others. Their actions helped bring a tense standoff to a peaceful conclusion and undoubtedly saved lives. Long Island is safer because of the brave men and women in law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way every day. Andrew will always back those who serve and protect our communities. National Prescription Take Back Day This weekend, Andrew's office participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in Sayville. This important event gave families a safe and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired medications. Too often, unused prescriptions left in homes can lead to misuse, addiction, or accidental poisoning. Programs like this are a simple but effective way to keep dangerous substances out of the wrong hands while making our communities safer. Andrew appreciates the local leaders and law enforcement professionals helping organize this event. Casework Highlight: Navigating Retirement Benefits A constituent recently contacted Andrew’s office after experiencing delays in the processing of federal retirement benefits following more than two decades of service as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After hearing from the constituent, Andrew’s team immediately engaged with the National Finance Center and worked to get answers. Following multiple inquiries, the retirement package was moved forward to the Office of Personnel Management for final processing.The constituent shared how grateful he was for the office’s assistance and responsiveness during an important life transition. Helping constituents navigate federal agencies is one of the most important services our office provides. If you ever need assistance with a federal agency, please don’t hesitate to reach out. WHAT'S NEW IN CONGRESS Supporting Lupus Advocacy Andrew met with advocates focused on lupus awareness, patient support, and medical research to hear directly about the challenges families face and the importance of continued progress in treatment and care. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Lupus Caucus, Andrew is committed to elevating these issues and working to advance policies that support patients and their families. Andrew appreciates the advocates who continue raising awareness, sharing their stories, and pushing for better outcomes for patients nationwide. He remains committed to supporting efforts that improve care, expand research, and give families hope for the future. Ensuring Reliable Postal Service Andrew joined a bipartisan effort this week supporting the Universal Service Obligation of the United States Postal Service, which guarantees mail delivery to every address in the country. For millions of Americans, especially seniors, veterans, small businesses, and families in suburban and rural communities, dependable mail service is not optional. It is essential. From prescription medications and paychecks to business shipments and family correspondence, reliable service matters. Andrew will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to strengthen the Postal Service, protect service standards, and ensure Americans can continue relying on timely and affordable delivery. Protecting Long Island Families Through Stronger Insurance Andrew also met with representatives from Big “I” New York, which represents independent insurance agencies serving communities across Long Island, to discuss ways to keep coverage affordable, reliable, and accessible for local families and businesses. From flood insurance to disaster preparedness, these issues matter on Long Island, where homeowners and small businesses understand the importance of being protected when storms strike or unexpected costs arise. Andrew discussed the need for long-term National Flood Insurance Program certainty and stronger mitigation efforts to reduce future damage. Andrew will continue working to ensure Long Islanders have access to dependable coverage and the protections they deserve. Meeting with the SMART Local 28 and LIUNA Andrew met this week with leaders from SMART Local 28 and Local LIUNA to discuss workforce development, infrastructure investment, and expanding economic opportunity. Their members play an essential role in constructing and maintaining the buildings, transportation systems, and critical infrastructure our communities depend on every day. Andrew also discussed the importance of protecting strong wages, supporting certified apprenticeship programs, and ensuring the trades remain a viable path to the American Dream.  Long Island succeeds when hardworking men and women have opportunities to build careers, support their families, and contribute to their communities.
