I’ve been thinking a lot about what responsibility looks like at this
moment.

Some days it’s sitting in a hearing, pushing back against decisions that
raise costs for working families or put politics ahead of science. 

Other days it’s meeting with students from our HBCUs or talking with
Maryland families who are trying to afford rent, groceries…just the basics
of life.

Lately, it’s been all of that, all at once.

When I spoke out recently about rising gas prices and the cost of war, it
wasn’t abstract for me. It never is. I hear from families every day who
are already stretched thin, and who feel like they’re carrying the weight
of decisions made far away from their kitchen tables.

That’s why I keep coming back to one simple idea: Congress has to work for
the people who don’t have luxury safety nets. The majority of working
people who are just trying to get through the month.

That’s also why I’ve been focused on things like expanding women’s heart
health screening, protecting public health from political interference,
and making sure our HBCUs have the support they deserve. These aren’t
separate fights, either; they’re all part of the same fight to give every
single American a fair shot. I won’t pretend any of this is easy. It
isn’t. But I also know what’s at stake if we slow down or step back right
now.
