This morning, President Donald Trump was on Fox News and when asked about
his refusal to fully fund the United States Postal Service’s operations,
he said this:

They need that money in order to make the post office work so it can
take all of these millions and millions of ballots ... But if they don’t
get those two items that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting.

Trump just made clear what we have known all along: his war on the USPS is
a war on vote-by-mail -- and a clear attempt to sabotage the election.

This is a five-alarm fire for our democracy, and Democrats in Congress
need to act like it.

Not all the breaking news today is bad. The Supreme Court upheld Rhode
Island's new vote-by-mail rules making it easier for people to cast their
ballots by mail without having to increase their potential exposure to the
virus.

That is great news, but it depends on the United States Postal Service as
the lynchpin of our ability to vote-by-mail. Trump knows this, and it’s
clear he’ll do anything in his power to stop Americans from voting --
including destroying the USPS.

He has installed one of his own mega-donors as the new Postmaster General,
refused to authorize additional funding, and worked to undercut the USPS’s
operations. If we allow this to happen, Trump could sabotage the election
in November.

Mitch McConnell needs Democratic votes to get any relief bill through the
Senate, so Democrats must use their leverage.
