Dear Neighbors,
This week in the Minnesota House, we held our final scheduled Capital Investment hearing. With only a few weeks left of the legislative session, the bulk of our committee work has been completed as we move our focus towards passing bills off the House Floor.
It’s difficult in a tied House, but impactful bills are moving through the process - just the other day I voted to pass broadly bipartisan legislation that toughens penalties for impersonating a police officer [ [link removed] ], bans nudification technology [ [link removed] ], and strengthens the ability of agencies to stop payments to program participants when fraud is suspected [ [link removed] ].
Crucial legislation like our Capital Investment Bill are still being negotiated, and we’re at the point of the year where I’m in regular meetings with House and Senate colleagues to hammer out a deal on a final bill that meaningfully invests in jobs and local infrastructure projects throughout the state.
Another important issue that will be the focus of much of our work in these remaining weeks is providing a lifeline to the Hennepin County Medical Center .
Hennepin Healthcare System is facing a number of significant financial challenges, much of them due to the policies of the Trump administration, including a $50 million budget shortfall in the short term, a $1.7 billion reduction in Medicaid revenue, the closure of UCare, and a projected $100 million loss in uncompensated care.
HCMC, as Minnesota’s largest safety-net health system, operates the busiest Level 1 trauma center and cares for everyone, including many of our neighbors, regardless of ability to pay. The potential closure of this health system places Minnesotans across the state at risk, and we must act now.
My colleague and Senate District neighbor, Rep. Esther Agbaje, is leading a bipartisan effort to support HCMC [ [link removed] ]. While discussions about the details of this proposal will continue, you can be assured of my support for efforts to address HCMC’s financial situation and provide for the long-term stability of Hennepin Healthcare so it can continue delivering high-quality, accessible care that we all rely on.
