John,

It’s time for a Federal Clean Slate — and what better time to uplift this
initiative than during Second Chance Month.

Currently, the Clean Slate Act (Senate Bill S1580 and House Bill HR3114)
would:

* Automatically seal certain nonviolent federal offenses and marijuana
cases
* Create a petition process for other eligible records
* Require the timely sealing of cleared cases
* Set rules for reapplying and legal assistance
* Shield employers from liability related to sealed records.

All over the country, states have led the way on passing [ [link removed] ]Clean Slate
policies, putting 18 million people on the path to having fully or
partially sealed records. However, there is no standard process on the
federal level — that needs to change. Here’s how:

Once people complete their sentence and remain crime-free for a period of
time, they deserve the opportunity to live a life that is not restrained
by the barriers of their record. By passing federal Clean Slate
legislation, Congress can ensure people in America have a fair shot at
living productive and fulfilling lives.

We’ve also created a quick, shareable infographic on this federal
initiative — download it (or screenshot), share it with your network, and
help spread the word about second chances!

Every action counts. Let’s keep the momentum going and make sure that
everyone has the opportunity to start again with a clean slate!
