On top of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic spreading into their ancestral territories, Indigenous peoples in the Amazon are also suffering the consequences of devastating oil spills that have yet to be cleaned up.
Meanwhile, in spite of their environmental and human rights policy commitments, many major European banks are financing the extraction and trade of crude oil in the Amazon.
Our latest report shows that European banks have provided $10 billion in trade financing for oil from the Ecuadorian Amazon to the U.S. They're complicit in the destruction it has wrought on Indigenous communities.
Right now, Indigenous communities in Ecuador are living through the worst oil spill in the last 15 years – a tragedy that has polluted their only source of water and food.
European banks have an opportunity to play a responsible and constructive role in advancing life over profit and preventing the next tragedy. They must stop financing crude oil from the Amazon now.
Call on these European banks to announce measurable and enforceable policies to immediately stop all financing of any oil-related activities, including trade, in the Amazon!
