I'm Auntie Mary, Peggy Flanagan's aunt. I don't write emails like this ever, but when Peggy asked if I'd share a few words with the people who believe in her, I said yes.
Team, I know a thing or two about campaigns — I actually ran for State Senate in 1982, long before it was typical to see women in the Capitol building.
Peggy was just three or four years old, but she was certainly our cutest volunteer — she passed out campaign literature on Halloween while trick-or-treating!
It was a tough race. I lost, but only by a half-percent in what had been a very red district. And I was so darn proud decades later, when my niece Peggy ran for the State House seat in the same area and won.
Peggy is fighting for the same values I ran on in 1982, team: Good jobs, a tax system where the middle class doesn’t pay more than billionaires, and more.
Here’s what I wrote in 1982. I think it still applies today.
“Reject the politics of desperation and polarization! I pledge that I will end this campaign as I began it, speaking out forcefully and unafraid on the issues that affect you and me.”
That’s exactly the kind of campaign Peggy is running in her race for the US Senate.
She’s focused on making sure you can afford the life you want to live, offering a vision of hope and opportunity for every Minnesotan.
Peggy wants to deliver a future where working families like ours can get ahead, not billionaires and corporations. She’s not afraid of a tough fight, and neither am I.
I know that with all our help, Peggy can win this race and make a real change in Washington.
