Dear John,
A sunny, blustery day at the University of Texas at El Paso yesterday with
Amy and our amazing Powered by People organizing and volunteer team:
In just over two hours, we registered many new voters, updated and
confirmed voter registrations and in every instance agreed to personally
stay in touch with each student to answer questions about elections and
voting and help ensure they cast their ballot in this year’s elections.
To make this work, we take our time to have open conversations about
whatever is on a student’s mind and then ensure we are connecting the dots
between what is happening in their lives and in the country with their
power to vote.
I met Victoria, a psychology major from Fabens who wants to be a teacher
and might get her master's at UTEP after she graduates. I told her she’s
taking on one of the most important jobs I can think of at one of the
toughest times to be a teacher. This next election could decide whether we
have more resources in public schools, less standardized testing and more
respect for teachers from our next governor. Amy and I wanted to make sure
she knew we are proud of her and have her back.
We also talked to Nicholas who moved to Texas from Pennsylvania a few
years ago to attend school here. He thought he couldn’t vote in Texas, but
we helped him understand that because he’s a full time resident he’s also
an eligible Texas voter. We helped him update his registration from
Pennsylvania to Texas so that he can vote in this next election.
When I asked Rafael why he got registered with us today he said, ”Why not?
It’s free and maybe I’ll need to use it someday.” He told me he’s pursuing
a criminal justice degree and wants to go to the police academy after he
graduates. He added that he wants a career where he can help people and
keep them safe.
Another student told Amy that he voted for Trump in 2024 “because of
crypto” but is unhappy now. He feels that Trump hasn’t followed through on
his promises. Amy made sure his voter registration was up to date and
promised to stay in touch with him through November. It’s important that
he knows that we don’t care who he voted for last time. All that matters
is that he makes the right choice this time. And by being open, respectful
and taking the time to talk with him, there’s a good chance that will
happen.
This is the work that sets us apart. Human to human connection, building
relationships of trust that radically increase the likelihood that young
people will vote.
In 2024, we took a voter turnout rate for 18-29 year olds in our program
from 37% to 79%.
