We have a simple demand for our senators: Turn water on for everyone, right now, for our own safety and the safety of our communities.
Negotiations have stalled on the next COVID relief bill and we need your help to keep the pressure on our senators to fight for a national moratorium on water shutoffs. People across the country are still without water. How do politicians expect people to keep healthy and survive without the most basic necessity? We need our senators to take action, and we need them to do it now.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed legislation that included a national moratorium on water shutoffs for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. This compassionate, common-sense measure was embedded in the HEROES Act, the House's proposed COVID-19 relief package.
As work continues on the Senate's version of the next relief bill, we need to make sure our senators protect our right to water and require utility providers to guarantee water to all the homes they serve. This means that water service must be restored and no one will lose water access because of unaffordable bills.
While many state and local governments acted immediately at the pandemic’s onset to protect the human right to water, many of these protections are expiring. Too many families are isolated in their homes without running water.
No one should have to worry about losing water service during a pandemic. A national moratorium on water shutoffs is the only way to guarantee running water for all of us.
Thanks for taking the time to protect our communities,
Mary Grant
