Guess what, John -- today is my birthday! And that’s always a good time to take stock.
As I gathered with family last weekend, we talked about the wild ride we have been on for the past year and a half. Five, ten, heck -- even two years ago -- I never imagined that I would be a member of the United States Congress. In the past, the end of August meant birthday festivities and preparing my kids for the upcoming school year. Last year, it meant gearing up for the 2018 midterms. And this year, it means I’m representing the people of PA-05 as I continue to fight for the return of rational and humane government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
During the House recess, I met with community members, traveled to Central America and visited a Texas immigration detention center with a bi-partisan delegation. As I write this, I’m heading back to D.C. early to work with the House Judiciary Committee on solutions to the gun violence epidemic.
I am working hard for the people of PA-05 and for all Americans, and I want to continue that work. An unfortunate reality about American politics is that campaigns cost money. I am proud to have taken the no fossil-fuels pledge and even more proud to hold an “F” rating from the NRA, but the money has to come from somewhere.
Our district is already being targeted by an alt-right challenger and a pro-Trump super PAC. Our finance team has reported to me that we’re $4,419 short of our monthly fundraising goal, and with just two days left in August, we can’t afford to fall behind.
