Spring is shareholder season, when many corporations hold annual investor meetings – and when shareholders can vote their proxy ballots on a wide range of social, environmental, and sustainable governance issues.

This year we are seeing proposals on issues including:

• Corporate political contributions and lobbying.

• Climate emissions, methane, and data center energy use.

• Data privacy and artificial intelligence.

• Labor standards, workplace diversity, and immigration policy.

• Pesticides, plastics, biodiversity, and agricultural management.

If you own stock directly (not through a mutual fund or ETF), the proxy ballot(s) you receive may include resolutions on issues like these. It’s your opportunity -- and responsibility -- to vote in line with your values.

• Want to tell Google and Amazon to report on their climate commitments amidst their data center buildouts?

• Want to tell Chubb insurance to consider suing fossil fuel companies to recover costs from climate disasters?

• Want to tell Walmart to report on the impacts of US immigration enforcement on its operations?

• Want to tell Merck and Abbott to disclose how many horseshoe crabs they are using to test medication?

• Want to tell JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley to disclose their lobbying expenses?

You can -- by voting your shares on your proxy ballots. Not voting is a vote for these big corporations to do whatever they want.
