Trump has created a perfect storm that is ruining American farmers in record numbers, driving many to bankruptcy, desperation, and even suicide. Those same folks I know are telling me that the best the Trump White House can come up with is to throw more money at a small fraction of farmers to help them try to weather that storm. Unsurprisingly, Trump’s only solution is another bailout—and an ineffective one at that. That’s why I am also hearing the scuttlebutt that many farmers (including longtime Republicans) are finally starting to see this for what it is: just another corrupt insider scheme to drive family farms into bankruptcy and then help Big Ag and wealthy MAGA investors snap up their farmland at a discount. JD Vance invested early in a tech outfit called AcreTrader that buys up bankrupted farmers’ land dirt cheap, and then facilitates sales for wealthy investors to turn huge profits. It’s private equity for family farms married with government corruption. And it is ruining the very people that families across America (and the world) rely on for fresh food.
