Trump "resconsiders" DACA & limits protections for young immigrants

We condemn the Trump administration's July 28th memo to "reconsider" the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and restrict the already-limited program. The memo shortens the renewal period for current DACA holders to one year, prevents new applicants from receiving DACA, and limits advance parole only to “exceptional circumstances.” See NIJC's DACA hub for resources, including frequently asked questions in English and Spanish.

Report exposes rights violations inherent in U.S. criminalization of migration

For over a year, NIJC investigated migration-related prosecution laws in the United States, interviewing 50+ people and examining the roots of these practices. Our new report, A Legacy of Injustice, sheds light on the racism and abuse inherent in laws and policies criminalizing migration. Check out the report.

ON THE BLOG: Alexis, a transgender asylum seeker from Guatemala who was featured in the report, shared her story on NIJC's blog, detailing the abuse, harassment, detention, and criminal prosecution she faced just to seek asylum in the United States. See and listen to her story.

WEBINAR: Watch a recording of our recent event where the lead author of NIJC's report talks about the investigation and how you can help stop the criminalization of migration. This webinar was the first in NIJC's new monthly online event series, The Policy Corner. Save the date for our next event on Tuesday, September 1! We'll send an invite soon.

Trump administration's attempt to end asylum causes public outcry

The Trump administration proposed regulations that would eviscerate the U.S. asylum system. NIJC and tens of thousands of other organizations and individuals fought back, including nearly 2,500 NIJC supporters. Among them, four asylees represented by NIJC submitted comments opposing the proposed rules. Read their comments defending asylum.

ON THE BLOG: Helen, who fled severe sexual and physical domestic violence in Honduras, said in her comment, "I only wanted peace, wanted security, wanted a new life. ... If I did not have the opportunity to fight for asylum, I don't know if I'd be alive." Read Helen's story.

IN THE NEWS: Ella, a young lesbian asylum seeker from Central Asia and NIJC client, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Blade sharing her story and telling how "[t]he proposed new rule may block me from getting the asylum protection I need, and force me to return to a country where my life is in danger."

Trump administration exploits pandemic to block asylum seekers

Before the comment period even closed on its previous rule destroying the asylum system, the administration issued yet another new proposed rule, this time weaponizing public health to bar asylum seekers. Shout out to the 1,000+ NIJC supporters like you who submitted comments opposing this rule! Read more about this harmful proposed rule.
