Mike Pence has picked a fight with the Supreme Court.

Just last week, the vice president publicly blasted Chief Justice John Roberts as a “disappointment to conservatives.” It looks like Pence is displeased by the way Roberts has pushed back on the Trump administration’s attacks on DACA, health care, and LGBTQ+ equality in the last few months.

In response, Pence is using the Republican Party’s recent string of courtroom defeats as a way to galvanize turnout for the November election -- telling conservatives that “the destiny of the Supreme Court is on the ballot in 2020.”

Joe Biden never once attacked a Supreme Court Justice in his 8 years as vice president. But Pence is right about one thing: the future of the Supreme Court rests on the next election. We know that, in 2016, 56% of voters who saw the Supreme Court as the “most important factor” in their decision ended up voting for Trump -- and it’s clear Pence is eager to repeat that winning strategy in 2020.
