Hi John,

Let’s talk about the environment and its impact on our cost of living. I know, not the connection people usually make, but it’s really a thing. Across the country, people are paying more just for their basic needs, like clean water. And the truth is, some of the biggest costs shaping our lives don’t always show up on a receipt. They show up in access, infrastructure, and the long-term decisions being made about our communities. Just take a look:

More than a decade after the Flint Water Crisis [[link removed]], access to clean, reliable water is still not a given. From Jackson, Mississippi [[link removed]], to parts of Louisiana [[link removed]], families are navigating outdated systems, inconsistent service, and rising costs. And while these challenges are often labeled as “system failures,” they don’t happen out of nowhere. They are shaped by years of decisions about where investments go — and where they don’t.

At the same time, new pressures are entering the picture. AI data centers are growing fast [[link removed]] — and they require huge amounts of water, energy, and land, putting added pressure on already strained systems [[link removed]]. And when those systems are pushed too far, the impact lands on the people — through higher costs, limited access, and long-term risks to our health and environment.

And that burden doesn’t fall evenly. Black, Brown, and low-income communities [[link removed]] are often the first to feel the impact and the last to see relief. Forcing these communities to “make it work,” often without being part of the decision in the first place.

So how does this all connect? Decisions about the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the communities we live in are made every day at the local, state, and federal levels. And how we show up this election season will impact our lives for years to come.

John, we still have power. Make sure you are registered and ready to vote at WhenWeAllVote.org [[link removed]].

Til next time,
Nandi
