Friend -- It has been 55 years since the Voting Rights Act was passed. This landmark legislation outlawed voting discrimination against racial and ethnic minorities and enforced voting rights by banning literacy tests and restricting state and local governments from changing voting laws without federal approval.

But just six year ago, a Supreme Court ruling stripped protections from discriminatory election practices. Since then, we’ve seen rampant voter suppression targeting people of color in the form of voter ID laws and fewer polling places.

Our work to ensure equal access to the ballot isn’t over. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act was passed by the House in December, which would expand voting rights and restore key protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It’s time the Senate does the same so we can give states the resources they need to protect the vote for everyone. Add your name to demand the Senate pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act now.
