We are just three days away from the demonstration at RAF Fairford over concerns the base is being used to commit war crimes by US bombers over Iran.

It comes at a critical time as Donald Trump announces an extension of the two-week ceasefire to facilitate talks - while simultaneously escalating US military deployments to the region with the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush, three destroyers, and another 5,000 US troops currently heading towards Iran.

Trump has also threatened to conduct further war crimes against Iran if his demands aren’t met by destroying every bridge and every power plant in the country. But fresh polling finds his popularity at home has dropped to a second term low and just over a quarter of the US population find these illegal attacks on Iran have been worth the costs.

Prior to the ceasefire, huge B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers had been carrying out twice-daily bombing missions from the base, dropping 2,000lb bombs on Iran, before returning directly to Fairford. By allowing these bombers to remain at British bases, the government is complicit in US war crimes.

Nuclear Disarmament, Not Nuclear Hypocrisy! Join CND’s online side event from NPT Rev Con – 28 April

Earlier this week, the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog gave a grave warning that continued global conflict and insecurity could prompt as many as 20 countries to pursue a nuclear weapon, leaving the world in a “very, very fragile position.”

With diplomats, politicians and civil society set to gather in New York for the start of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference on Monday, these negotiations couldn’t come at a more critical time.

Running to 22 May, CND along with other representatives from the nuclear disarmament movement will be there to keep the pressure up on nuclear weapons states to abide by their commitments and for others to reaffirm their non-proliferation pledges.

Our online side event from New York, ‘Nuclear Disarmament, Not Nuclear Hypocrisy,’ brings together leading voices from parliament, civil society, and science to expose the contradictions at the heart of the system and to demand a way forward.
