Seeking Wisdom From Black Leaders
There’s change in the air. Despite the United States’ uphill battle against COVID-19, and even as the economy is hitting record low performance, there’s a growing sense of hope and a strong desire for tangible action. This hope stems from the continuation of a movement demanding racial justice: a movement that has energized a nation and has challenged us all to look at ourselves in the mirror, to open our eyes, and to vote with intention come November. It's also Black Philanthropy Month, when we take a moment to celebrate and learn about the impact and influence of black philanthropy. Read more below.

What We See: Wisdom from Black Leaders During Simultaneous and Intersecting Pandemics
2020 will go down in history as a year rife with struggle. It will also be remembered as a year that woke up a nation—and the world—to the systemic injustices that continue to permeate our society. Read more ([link removed] ) from dana e. fitchett on how this movement is calling for sustained momentum, and how symbolic allyship just isn’t enough this time around. In order to move in this new direction, we need the people who hold power and privilege to take more responsibility for getting us there. Check out the piece here ([link removed] ) .
Beyond the Protests: Sustaining Momentum Toward Racial Equity
There is tremendous energy around racial justice and groups like #BlackLivesMatter today. What must be done to change our criminal and legal systems to ensure that they uphold justice and police accountability? How can we transform the momentum that has emerged from the 2020 anti-racism protests into policies that promote racial equity? How can philanthropy contribute to this transformation? Support recovery for those hardest hit in the Bay Area by the pandemic
For essential workers, the economy never shut down. Their choice was never between quarantining or going back to work, but instead how to protect themselves and their families to keep the economy going. This is a racial justice issue—66% of essential and frontline workers are Black and brown people working in sectors that never closed. Their employers are the least likely to offer worker protections like paid sick leave, personal protective gear, or work for home arrangements. BARHII, the coalition of the Bay Area’s 11 public health departments and a project of the Tides Center, launched the 4R Platform for an equitable COVID-19 plan ([link removed] ) to radically recenter the recovery around racial justice. The regional network has already passed eviction moratoriums that cover 100% of the Bay Area, extended paid sick leave, and laid the groundwork for guaranteed income pilots. Capacity Building for Intermediaries for Scale
The ongoing pandemic and the increased momentum for racial equity elevate the importance of higher education as a driver of socioeconomic mobility for Black, Latinx, ([link removed] ) Native American ([link removed] ) and low-income ([link removed] ) students. Intermediaries for Scale (IfS) ([link removed] ) , an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ([link removed] ) , was launched in January to bring together and strengthen the capacity of a cohort of organizations uniquely positioned to guide colleges to close equity gaps and adapt to a changing future. As a proud implementation partner, Tides is helping IfS organizations identify priorities for capacity growth, select consulting partners to meet their needs, and facilitate learning across various capacity-building efforts. IfS organizations collectively represent nearly three-quarters of two-and four-year public institutions in the U.S., making this work critical to advancing Tides’ vision of a world of shared prosperity and social justice.
