I will never forget the trauma of Jan. 6, 2021. The mob outside. Insurrectionists storming the Capitol building and breaking doors and windows to get in. The urgent discussions between members of Congress deciding how to protect ourselves and ensure that the work of counting the electoral votes went on.

 

That was a direct, violent attack on our democracy.

 

Now, Trump’s Department of Justice is compounding it with an attack on the rule of law: it is moving to overturn the convictions of the white nationalist leaders who led the mob in a violent effort to overturn a free and fair election.

 

 

Using the DOJ to do the dirty work for the administration is apparently the job of Trump’s FOX News transplants in the department, people like Jeanine Pirro, now serving as US Attorney for the District of Columbia. Could this DOJ be more of a farce?

 

I spent almost six years in the Department of Justice, when it actually stood for justice, when it was ruthlessly nonpartisan, and it breaks my heart to see what it’s become. 

 

The Department of Justice should be pursuing accountability, cracking down on corruption, and defending the Constitution. But under this administration, the DOJ is a tool for attacking enemies and covering up wrongdoing.

 

Someone has to stand up to this abuse of power, to defend our country and its people. Someone has to fight back. I have and I always will. Because this fight isn’t over. It’s just beginning, and I won’t back down.

 

 

Time and time again, we’ve seen that this administration cannot be trusted. They aren’t interested in justice or protecting the American people — their only interest is covering for Donald Trump and his friends.

 

John, it’s time to fight back together and put the justice back in the Department of Justice.
