Lifting Us All: Working Toward a Hunger-Free America & How You Can Help this August

Members of Hunger Free NYC's Food Action Board completed a 4-week virtual nutrition course this week and met up at the track near Yankee Stadium for some socially distanced exercise. Taught in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension, the workshop covered basic nutrition, portion sizes, how to budget for groceries and prepare healthy meals.

"Access Denied" Report Shows Preventable Barriers to Enrolling in SNAP and Unemployment Insurance
Hunger Free America's nationwide survey found that understaffed, inefficient government offices created unacceptable barriers to accessing Unemployment Insurance and SNAP benefits during the pandemic. We encourage all who favor updating the public benefits system to contact their Senators ([link removed][UNIQID]) and express support for the Hope Act ([link removed][UNIQID]) , which would provide funding for pilot projects to create a unified, online platform where Americans could easily apply for multiple federal aid programs at the same time. With our Summer AmeriCorps VISTA members finishing up their service next week, we'd like to thank them for their hard work over the last few months. From Miami to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to Minneapolis, these national service participants have connected families to federally-funded free Summer Meals, spread awareness about the Pandemic-EBT program, and helped food pantries and food banks with their operations. Mariana and Shirbrina, pictured above, served Miami-Dade County with Florida Impact to End Hunger ([link removed][UNIQID]) . Thank you, VISTA members!

Hunger Free America is thrilled to launch our new National Hunger Database on August 25th! The new database contains the most comprehensive list of food banks, food pantries, and federal food assistance offices across the country. The USDA National Hunger Hotline will use the data to connect callers to food, and all users will be able to search for food assistance by city, zip code, or address, filtering their search by program type such as a private or government resource. Contact our team to make sure your organization is included. ([link removed][UNIQID])
