Victory! Parents Now Have Control with New Parental Rights Handbook and Training, Passed at Texas Education Meeting

Have you ever faced a situation at your child’s school and wanted to speak out but felt uninformed? Have you ever confidently filed a grievance but felt that the school board was not familiar with your rights?

Thanks to the Texas State Board of Education, parents will now receive a Parental Rights Handbook at the beginning of the school year. Additionally, school board members will receive special training on parental rights before the school year begins. At the April Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting, the SBOE voted and approved the parental rights training for school board members. This effort was required by a bill authored by Senator Angela Paxton that passed in the 2025 Texas Legislature.

Starting in the next school year, your school board members will be fully trained on your rights regarding Sex Ed Opt-in, the prohibition of LGBT topics in the classroom, the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, and much more!

Texas Values was committed to see the finished product by providing testimony and personal feedback to the SBOE on the drafting of the Parental Rights handbook and school member training. Senate Bill 204 was a bill that Texas Values supported during the Legislative Session. SBOE Member Julie Pickren helped champion this issue by leading a workgroup of parents and community members last year to help develop the materials.

As you may have seen in our blog and on social media, we are pleased that the final product will mention the newly passed Texas Women’s Privacy Act. That means, school boards can no longer claim ignorance of the law when it comes to male students using girls’ locker rooms, showers, and bathrooms in public schools.
