Dear AFSP Supporter,

I’m excited to share important news about the work you make possible. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and The Jed Foundation today announce our intent to merge as equals, becoming the nation’s largest nonprofit dedicated to preventing suicide across the lifespan.

You helped make this moment possible.

Through your shared commitment to our mission, AFSP is a recognized leader in advancing suicide research, providing education on suicide prevention, supporting a robust loss-survivor community, mobilizing a nationwide network of volunteers and strengthening federal and state advocacy to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

What this merger means for you.

United as one organization, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention/The Jed Foundation (AFSP/JED) will leverage the strengths and resources of AFSP and JED to have even greater impact on preventing suicide than either organization has the capacity to achieve independently.

AFSP/JED is uniquely positioned to bring comprehensive suicide prevention to scale nationwide. AFSP’s research investment, policy influence, national chapter presence, and prevention and loss support programs stretch across the lifespan. JED focuses on protecting emotional health and preventing suicide for young people by strengthening the systems and places where they live, learn and grow. Together, the combined organization will achieve a coordinated national prevention strategy that spans youth through adulthood, encompassing the full range of prevention work, from strengthening connectedness and well-being to ensure effective intervention and fostering healing after loss.

AFSP’s long-time commitments to research, education and advocacy are not changing, and we will continue to bring suicide prevention to communities through our Chapter network nationwide.

Together, the new organization will connect communities, institutions, researchers, and policymakers around shared goals and data, and a credible, trusted national voice that can lead culture change while driving measurable population-level outcomes.

John MacPhee, the current JED CEO, will lead the combined organization following the closing of the merger. Bob Gebbia, CEO of AFSP, will stay on as the Immediate Past CEO of the combined organization through his retirement on January 15, 2027, to support the integration.
