Most people are focused on the VP news, but there’s still a lot of work to be done before Monday to secure the climate measures that we need in the DNC platform.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Yesterday was a big day for the Democratic party, John.

Joe Biden announced that Kamala Harris will be his official running mate. And we’re just 5 days away from the Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee.

But while most people are focused on the Vice Presidential news, there’s still a lot of work to be done before Monday to secure the climate policies that we need in the DNC platform.

Biden and Harris have both released climate plans that are bolder than that of any Presidential nominee in history, particularly when it comes to holding the fossil fuel industry accountable for their role in the climate crisis.

This is an important testament to our power as a movement, and we cannot let the DNC's weak platform water down our progress. It’s up to us to make sure that the next administration and the DNC align around strong policies that end fossil fuels and build a Green New Deal.

Time is running out so we’re asking again. Will you sign our petition right now to the DNC members demanding that a phase-out of fossil fuel production be included in the 2020 climate platform?

After thousands of you sent in petitions earlier this month, we won some important improvements to the 2020 party platform (which had previously only mentioned fossil fuels once). Those wins included a commitment to a 1.5°C warming target, banning fossil fuels on public lands, and ending fossil fuels subsidies.

But none of these measures are a commitment to keep fossil fuels in the ground and only bring the platform to where it was in 2016 – and nowhere close to the mainstream of the party. Nothing in this current platform takes on the fossil fuel industry and there is no plan to justly and equitably wind down fossil fuel extraction in line with science.

To be honest with you, John, the fossil fuel industry isn’t threatened by this platform. Without a ban on fracking or a plan to phase out fossil fuels, they will continue to pollute communities and ruin the climate without consequence.

We will have our work cut out for us to hold Biden's administration accountable to his promises for bold and urgent climate action in 2021, and we need the DNC to be our allies, not our opposition. We have from now until the Convention this Monday to put as much pressure as possible on the DNC to do what's right for the climate. If enough climate voters speak out, we can demand that keeping fossil fuels in the ground be included.

With your help, the climate movement can push the Democratic Party to stand for climate justice. Add your name to our petition now.

The stakes this November are too high: the Democratic Party needs to answer Trump's climate denial with a call for serious action for climate justice.

We need solutions to the climate crisis that advance justice for workers and communities confronted daily with systemic racism and toxic pollution – not watered-down policies that take us backwards and deny climate science.

Thank you for speaking out.
