,

There’s a lot on my mind as it’s been a big 24 hours.

It feels like every day since January 2017 has been defined by attacks on immigrants. The Muslim Ban. The DACA rescission. Family separation. Kids in cages. Workplace raids. The public charge ‘immigrant wealth test.’ And then a certain moment comes around that lends perspective and renewed purpose.

At the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund, we could not be more excited that Senator Kamala Harris – the daughter of a Jamaican immigrant father and Indian immigrant mother — is the Vice Presidential nominee. Senator Harris’ life story embodies the America that we fight for every day. She is a champion for immigrants who has prosecuted the case against Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda like few others, from joining protests at immigration facilities, to fighting to hold Trump’s DHS accountable in the Senate.

In less than three months we have the chance to build a vision for America that includes immigrants and that celebrates their contributions by electing Vice President Biden and Senator Kamala Harris. Will you donate to build our organizing power to make Donald Trump a one-term president? >>>

Last night, I started to feel something I haven’t felt a lot over the last few years: hope. After the traumas of Trump’s first term – his constant scapegoating of immigrants and people of color, the catastrophic consistency of his agenda of hate – Senator Harris’ pick yesterday was a reminder of what’s possible in this country.

For me as an Asian American woman, the daughter of Indian immigrants, and the mom of two South Asian kids – including one daughter – Harris’ selection is a game changer. For my parents, it’s a confirmation of their hopes and dreams that in this country they crossed oceans for, anything is possible. For my daughter Leela, who knows Kamala Harris because of the children’s book Harris wrote, her place on the ticket is a statement that in America, Leela can be whatever she wants. And to me, a woman of color who works in politics, this is a B.F.D. I can only imagine how others feel, from the larger Asian American community, to the tens of millions of immigrants from all over the world who have wondered over the years if America was a country for them, to the Black women who have long been the unsung heroines of our country’s long march toward justice. This moment is for all of us.

But we have a lot of work ahead of us. This President has spent every day in office telling the world that he only believes in an America for some of us, dividing us by how we look, where we’re from, or how we worship. In Trump’s America, there isn’t room for people like Kamala Harris, or me, or the millions of immigrants his Administration has made its mission to constantly attack and exclude at every opportunity. Senator Kamala Harris’ nomination can be turned into more than just a representation of our values and our hopes — but only if we win in November. And then, new work will begin. We will need to hold a new administration accountable to help create the political environment and policy solutions we know are needed to rebuild America.

Trump’s presidency has been a nightmare for so many. We are going to spend every day between now and November 3rd doing everything we can to put an end to it, and then create progress, together. Help us make this inspirational moment into a moment of transformation.

WIll you help us win this election?
