From July 29th to August 6th, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross visited three South American countries Brazil, Argentina, and Peru in order to further solidify the strong relationships the United States has with these nations as well as to push for an end to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

South American nations are critical partners for the United States in economic, political, and humanitarian matters, said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. The stability of the Western Hemisphere is our shared responsibility each of our great countries succeeds and fails together.

U.S. Department of Commerce Announces a New Draft Suspension Agreement on Fresh Tomatoes from Mexico [ [link removed] ]

Recently, the U.S. Department of Commerce initialed a draft agreement with Mexican tomato growers to suspend the ongoing antidumping (AD) investigation of fresh tomatoes from Mexico, ensuring that the domestic tomato industry will be protected from unfair trade.

Women have driven 80% of the overall growth in the booming health care field since the turn of the century. NIST Releases Draft Security Feature Recommendations for IoT Devices [ [link removed] ]

Appliances from refrigerators to thermostats are now available in models that interact with a wireless network, making them easier to control with a computer or smartphone. Because these devices can also put our security at risk, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a guide to help us all adjust to a world where seemingly everything is connected and potentially vulnerable. The guide identifies a set of voluntary recommended cybersecurity features to include in network-capable devices, whether designed for the home, the hospital or the factory floor.

Rocky Mountain Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office 5 years supporting innovation [ [link removed] ]

Five years ago this summer, we opened our Rocky Mountain Regional Office (RMRO) in the Byron G. Rogers Building in downtown Denver. It was a huge day for both the USPTO and the people of Denver, whose great city is home to 24 federally funded research laboratories, four major research universities, and a creative and innovative environment full of start-ups. It also helped fulfill a key promise of the America Invents Act, to better connect inventors and entrepreneurs around the country with the resources of the USPTO.

Gross Domestic Product, Second Quarter 2019 (Second Estimate); Corporate Profits, Second Quarter 2019 (Preliminary Estimate) [ [link removed] ]

Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 2.0 percent in the second quarter of 2019 (table 1), according to the "second" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 3.1 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month.

The "New" Purpose of a Corporation [ [link removed] ]

In case you missed it, on August 19, 2019, the Business Roundtable released a statement on the purpose of a corporation. This statement is probably overdue by at least a decade or two; however, it is still worthy of appreciation, as it acknowledges what many good corporations already practice and recognizes the importance of creating value for all key stakeholders, rather than focusing just on quarterly financial returns and stockholder earnings. The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and many others published articles about the change.

U.S. Department of Commerce Announces Availability Of $587 Million To Aid Communities Impacted By Natural Disasters [ [link removed] ]

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross today announced that the Departments Economic Development Administration (EDA) has published the Fiscal Year 2019 (FY2019) Disaster Supplemental Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) making $587 million available to eligible grantees in communities impacted by Presidentially declared natural disasters in 2018, and floods and tornadoes in 2019.
