I’m ashamed (but unfortunately not surprised) of what just happened in Congress.

North Dakotans know the value of public lands.

We’re the home of Teddy Roosevelt and the Badlands. We hunt, we fish, we hike, and we expect these places to be there for our kids and grandkids.

So you can imagine how disgusted I was to hear that Julie Fedorchak, in January, voted YES to open up the Boundary Waters in neighboring Minnesota to a foreign mining operation. This YES vote paved the way for the Senate to pass this destructive legislation just last week. One of the most pristine wilderness areas in North America was handed over to an overseas conglomerate to extract the wealth and leave behind the toxic runoff.

She loves to talk “America First” on cable news. But when it came time to vote, she put a foreign corporation’s interests ahead of ours.

That’s not hypocritical, though. It makes perfect sense once you understand her actual governing philosophy: serve whoever cuts the biggest checks. In her first year in Congress, 73% of her campaign funds came from special-interest PACs.

This vote is a slap in the face to anyone who respects the outdoors, and it sets a dangerous precedent. If she’s fine selling out the Boundary Waters to the highest foreign bidder, what’s next? Strip-mining the Badlands?
