John, last fall,
Ken Paxton launched a baseless investigation into Powered by People and
even threatened to jail me.
His lawsuit was never really about the law. It was about trying to scare
us out of organizing, out of speaking up, out of doing the work it takes
to build power in Texas.
We’re now back in court making sure that we present the facts and stand up
for freedom of speech in Texas. Paxton, on the other hand, is getting
called out by judges for what they’ve described as “unprofessional
conduct.” I’m grateful for the progress we’ve made, but have to
acknowledget the real cost to standing up to his abuse of power.
We’ve now spent more than $500,000 in legal fees fighting Paxton’s
frivolous lawsuits.
Every dollar, every hour, every resource we’re forced to spend fighting
him in court is a dollar, an hour, a resource we can’t put into the work
that actually gets people registered and turned out to vote.
That’s the point of Paxton's attacks. To drain us, slow us down, and make
the relational organizing work we do that much harder.
This week we exhausted the initial retainer we set aside to defend
ourselves. If we’re going to beat him in court and keep organizing across
Texas, we need your help.

fighting back against Ken Paxton and continue the work it will take to win
in Texas this November.
