Sandy, an organizer for Powered by People in Waco, wrote a message for our
supporters. Sandy lost her dad this year. She is choosing to fight, to
have hope, and to organize in one of the reddest parts of Texas.
Please read Sandy’s note below. Thank you.
The crew of Artemis II just made history by flying around the Moon and
going farther into space than any humans ever have. And yes, that’s
incredible. But what’s really stuck with me is the way they chose to show
up while they were out there.
They didn’t just focus on the mission. They made space for humanity. They
did things like honor the wife of their teammate who passed from cancer a
few years ago. And every time they checked in with Houston, they didn’t
just send updates. They sent messages of unity, love, and connection.
In one of the most high-pressure, high-stakes moments imaginable, they led
with compassion. They reminded us that no matter how far we go, what
actually makes us great is how we treat each other.
To quote one of the astronauts on this mission, Christina Koch, who is the
first woman to make a mission to the Moon:
“When we burned this burn towards the moon, I said that we do not leave
Earth. That is true. We will explore. We will build ships. We will visit
again. We will construct science outposts.
We will drive rovers, we will do radio astronomy, we will found companies.
We will bolster industry, we will inspire.
But ultimately, we will always choose Earth. We will always choose each
other.”
And I can see the connection between their work and our work at Powered by
People.
Our work isn’t just about numbers or data or turnout. It’s about the
people, those we meet and engage. It’s about making sure someone feels
seen. It’s about reminding someone that they matter, that their voice
matters, that they’re part of something bigger than themselves. It’s about
making sure no one feels invisible in a system that depends on them.
That crew carried that message all the way around the Moon. And we carry
it into every conversation, every event, every neighborhood, every voter
we reach.
Different mission. Same purpose.
We connect. We uplift. We remind people who they are to each other.
So if you're like me and things feel heavy right now, just remember that
we’re part of that same thread of humanity they were representing from
space.
If you’re tired, discouraged, or wondering if it’s making a difference, it
is. You are.
And that matters more than anything.
Thank you all for being part of this,
Sandy
