I want to be straight with you about something.



A couple of nights ago, I cast one of the most important votes of my career in
Congress and it put me at odds with a lot of my Republican colleagues.



I voted NO on the FISA reauthorization.



Now, you might be wondering: why would a conservative Republican like me break
from the party on a national security vote?



Because I care about the Constitution.



FISA Section 702 allows the federal government to warrantlessly sweep up the
private communications of American citizens on American soil without probable
cause, without a judge's approval, and without your knowledge.



That's not national security. That's a surveillance state.



I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. Not a version
of it. Not a convenient interpretation of it—but the whole thing.

Tennesseans don't need a governor who goes along to get along in Washington.
They need a governor who has already proven—with his votes, not just his
words—that he will stand up for their rights when it's hard.



That's the governor I intend to be.
