John,
Congress was back in session this week, and I’ve been working on new
legislation to snuff out foreign fraudsters. We also celebrated tax relief for
hardworking citizens and a win for northern Minnesota. Here is a quick update
on it.
This month, I introduced the Preventing the Repatriation of American Benefits
Act. This legislation takes a firm stand: if a non-citizen is receiving federal
benefits and sends more than $1,000 a year out of the country, they will lose
eligibility for those benefits. This legislation comes as a response to the
millions… potentially BILLIONS of dollars taken out of Minnesotans' paychecks
through welfare fraud and sent overseas, including to Al-Shabaab, a terrorist
organization linked to Al-Qaeda. Our taxpayer-funded safety net is for people
who have a real need, not for terrorists. This bill backs that up with real
enforcement. It requires eligibility verification, mandates compliance
certifications, and directs the Treasury to track where benefits are going.
This is common sense, and it's why I introduced this bill to protect taxpayers
and end the gravy train for fraudsters.
We will never celebrate Tax Day, but we should recognize putting more money
back in your pocket and giving businesses what they need to succeed. We have
been seeing the impact of pro-family, pro-worker policies. Thanks to the
Working Families Tax Cuts Act (One Big Beautiful Bill), Minnesotans are
receiving an average tax refund of $3,548 this year! That’s real money going
back into your pocket to use according to your priorities. From no tax on tips
and overtime to letting businesses immediately expense investments, these are
the kinds of policies that reward work and expand opportunity. I’ll keep
fighting for policies that lower your tax burden, support job creators, and
ensure that you keep more of what you earn.
Congress took a massive step forward in reversing one of the Biden
administration’s most misguided and legally flawed actions—a sweeping 20-year
ban on mining across 225,000 acres of Minnesota’s Superior National Forest.
This foolish moratorium locked away some of the largest untapped deposits of
copper, nickel, and cobalt in the world, putting our nation’s mineral security
at risk. These are the materials that power our defense systems, drive our
technology sector, and underpin the supply chains we need to compete with
China. I was proud to back Congressman Pete Stauber's resolution to lift this
ban, and I'm glad the Senate has now sent it to President Trump. The Biden
administration’s process was flawed from the start. They failed to properly
submit the order to Congress, which is exactly why it was vulnerable to repeal
under theCongressional Review Act. For too long, misguided environmental policy
has forced the United States to depend on foreign adversaries for critical
minerals. Minnesota has the resources to change that. Responsible mining, done
under some of the most rigorous environmental standards in the world, is how we
produce what we need here at home without outsourcing our future to China or
anyone else.
As always, thank you for your continued support and the privilege of serving
you. If my office can ever be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
With gratitude,
