Dear John,
I visited Texas A&M yesterday. I kept hearing about academic freedom. I
met A&M philosophy professor Dr. Martin Peterson who was not allowed to
teach…. PLATO!! in his PHILOSOPHY class because the Symposium includes
descriptions of homosexual love. Find this outrageous? Join the protest on
Monday, details included on the flyer that Leah is holding:
Our volunteer Ken told me about working for USAID for 16 years, all over
the world…Mozambique, Liberia, Bangladesh. He’s an aquatic disease
specialist. Happy he’s keeping his public service going with us.
Met Briana who reminded me that we first met in Garden City (Glasscock
County) in 2018 (now/then):
Paige told me she was studying physics and I told her I’m fascinated by
this stuff, but it’s beyond my comprehension. Is light a wave or a
particle? She said “it’s neither more than it’s both” — which blew my mind
and left me more confused. She said check out A&M professor Tatiana, she’s
the GOAT. I did and she is. (Tatiana Erukhimova).
Liliana told me about a friend in Dallas whose dad was picked up and
deported and how scared people in her community are. She asked me “What do
I tell her?” I said, tell her we’re with her, we’re doing the work to make
sure our laws and actions match our values. Registering and turning out
young people is key to that.
Ronin said hi and I said like the De Niro movie where he removes the
bullet himself? Yes, it means “lone warrior” but she’s not alone.
Emaan is spending the summer interning for the Muslim Public Affairs
Council in DC and will volunteer for us when she comes back in the fall.
Freshman Leaders in Christ approached me as I was on my way out and asked
if there was anything that I would like them to pray for. I said how about
an end to the divisions in this country, to the rampant corruption, to the
wars that we wage. How about praying for peace?
The young man leading us said a beautiful and powerful prayer. Afterward
we talked about the mysteries of science and religion (“it’s neither more
than it’s both”), the goodness that’s out there and our desire for people
to be kind to each other.
Big thanks to team PXP and A&M students. Gig em!
More soon,
Beto
