Legislative Update from Rep. Ginny Klevorn
Dear Neighbors,
It seems as though spring has finally sprung. I hope you’re enjoying the chirping birds and fresh air. On April 25th, it’s Free Parks and Trails Day in Minnesota! Four times a year Minnesota state parks offer free entrance on four days, waiving the need for a $7 vehicle permit. It’s a great way to revisit our local gems or explore a new part of the state. You can use the parkfinder here [ [link removed] ] to plan your next trip.
Free Park Day 2026
We’re in the final stretch of session and we’re making steady progress on finding common ground on the issues that deserve our attention.
Work continues on the OIG bill. The State Government Finance and Policy Committee, of which I’m a co-chair, has chipped away at adopting several GOP and DFL proposals. My co-chair and I spoke with Mary Lahammer on TPT’s Almanac at the Capitol series recently. You can watch the segment by clicking on the image below.

I’m also pleased to report legislation [ [link removed] ] I’m carrying is making its way through the committee process. I have a handful of bills to help prevent fraud, including but not limited to: withholding payments to program participants when warranted; enhancing agency summaries of program grants; and prohibiting allowing anyone outside of the Minnesota Legislature from using state email addresses and phone numbers.

I’m also working on a bill that requires assisted living facilities to be better prepared for emergencies involving residents by having clear response plans, detailed procedures, and properly trained staff on-site. Specifically, facilities must ensure some staff have emergency medical responder training, and even unlicensed workers must be trained on how to handle emergencies. The goal is to make sure residents get faster and more effective help.
Conversations around assault weapon bans legislation continues to stall. I’m hopeful my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will come to the table and help us do what a majority of Minnesotans are asking for: common sense gun violence prevention and accountability measures like safe storage and strengthened background checks.
Creating good policy and legislation requires thorough vetting to ensure we’re following the Constitution, not duplicating work already being done by other agencies, and making sure we’re not doing anything to jeopardize funding we receive or put vulnerable people at risk.

Grateful to Wayzata School Board members Kader, Ginestra, and Chair Sohoni for taking the time out of their day to visit with me at the Capitol! Our neighbors serving our schools are committed to student success. And I'm always glad to work with them.

I loved meeting with heart safe volunteers from Plymouth, speaking up about the importance of AED and CPR training for coaches. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at any age. Know the signs. Be prepared. Thank you for all you do to save lives, Gary, Norm, and Russ!
