I’m sure you’ve seen the reports: In Albuquerque a militia group showed up to a protest to “protect” a statue of a conquistador. Instead, they harassed peaceful protesters and the evening ended in gunfire with one man critically wounded. In Michigan, armed civilians stormed the state capitol demanding an end to coronavirus restrictions. Their armed intimidation forced lawmakers to cancel the legislative session. In Washington state, near Alliance HQ, militia members organized heavily armed neighborhood patrols, intimidating business owners and threatening neighbors.

These militia groups, emboldened by extreme rhetoric from Donald Trump and the gun lobby, continue to stoke racism and white supremacy and sow hate in our communities.

At any opportunity, these militia groups use public display of their military-style weapons to intimidate others, squash civil discourse, and threaten public safety. Across the Pacific Northwest, right-wing militia members are even making a run for elected office.

These extremists want to make it seem like our communities are bitterly divided, but we know that’s not true. A majority of Americans want to see smart gun violence prevention laws in place and want leaders who are dedicated to building safer, more just communities.
