Dear John,
On Monday sanctions were imposed on me by the Chinese Communist Party.
While it is a strange feeling to be singled out by the world’s leading authoritarian state, it will not deter me or Freedom House from our proud solidarity with the people of Hong Kong.
The inconvenience of these sanctions pale in comparison to the sacrifices of those seeking to defend democratic values in Hong Kong and human rights throughout China. Beijing’s announcement is an attempt to distract from its campaign to silence free speech, violate the rule of law, and repress the people of Hong Kong. Freedom House continues to stand with protesters and activists who are putting their lives on the line in defense of democracy and against authoritarianism.
Today, I am writing to request your support so that we can keep pressure on Beijing and show our support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
At this critical moment, we will continue to advocate that the US takes strong action to stand with Hong Kong and those on the front lines of the fight for freedom. And our work doesn’t stop there. As China expands its influence beyond its borders, we’ll continue to shine a light on its efforts to undermine human rights and democracies, and prop up oppressive regimes around the world.
Stand with us as we continue our crucial work in support of Hong Kongers and those fighting for freedom and democracy.
Warmly,
Michael Abramowitz
President of Freedom House
P.S. You can read more about my experience and China’s attacks on our partner organizations and advocates in my recent piece in The Atlantic.
