A bill in Congress would ban fracking once and for all.
John,
The IPCC warned that the global temperature cannot rise more than 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels if we want to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Science has shown that fracking is a primary contributor to climate change.
Fracked gas plants and infrastructure release dangerous greenhouse gases that drastically alter the planet’s climate. But there is something we can do to fight back. Legislation in Congress would ban fracking once and for all.
The Fracking Ban Act would ban fracking everywhere by 2025, immediately halt all new federal permits for fracking and fracking infrastructure, and immediately ban fracking within 2,500 feet of homes and schools. The legislation also launches a just transition for fracking industry workers.
Regulations can never make fracking safe. The entire fracking process — from drilling a well to disposing of the toxic, chemical-laden waste — endangers our air, water and health. Fracking facilities and plants are disproportionately located in rural and low-income communities, contributing to racial, social and environmental injustice.
The fracking industry has a best friend in the White House, as Trump and his administration have rolled back environmental protections and laws so Big Oil & Gas can drill and build gas plants and pipelines that will continue to destroy public lands, pollute the air and water, and push the climate even further toward chaos. It’s time to put a stop to Big Oil & Gas.
The Fracking Ban Act was introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and so far the bill has 18 co-sponsors in the House. The fracking industry hates this bill because it would shut down its toxic industry for good. It's spending millions on lobbying efforts to keep Food & Water Action supporters like you from getting more Members of Congress to co-sponsor the bill.
As a leader in the fight to ban fracking and stop fossil fuel projects, Food & Water Action was the first national organization to call for a ban on fracking. With your support, we have banned fracking in Maryland, New York, and Washington, and in hundreds of communities across the country because you know the dangers of fracking.
