Something historic happened in Harrisburg, and dozens of you joined us to witness it.
Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program. Lawmakers heard directly from the leaders who are in the field, stopping gun violence before it happens. It was an important moment to recognize that gun violence doesn’t have to be inevitable. We held a virtual watch party, with commentary from Ashleigh, our Campaign Director, a lively chat and some post-testimony interviews during panel breaks. Change is never instantaneous in movements like ours, so it’s critical that we take a moment, come together, and celebrate progress whenever it happens.
The message from Community Violence Intervention leaders was clear: these programs work. From the story of a repeat offender who changed their ways, to reaching out to incarcerated folks while they get a haircut. We heard examples of some of the many ways these programs work.
VIP-funded initiatives are a critical reason gun homicides in Pennsylvania have fallen 46.5% since their 2022 peak. That's hundreds of families who still have their loved ones.
And yesterday, legislators listened. |
