This is a proud day for California.

I've known Kamala for nearly half of my life. People reveal their true characters when the cameras are off and no one’s looking. It's in those quiet moments that Kamala's profound empathy, intellect and grace shine through. She cares.

Kamala is quick with a belly laugh, some dance moves, expressions of shared joy and true happiness when she’s told of a friend’s success or good news. And, when she learns that someone has a family member who is sick, she drops everything to see how they are doing.

Combining tough-as-nails conviction with big-hearted compassion – that’s her superpower. Then there are the public moments and her career in elected office, where Kamala has harnessed her caring for others to make profound change in their lives.

When San Francisco became the first place in America to recognize same-sex marriage in 2004, Kamala stood with me on the steps of City Hall marrying happy gay and lesbian couples. She expanded the power of the District Attorney's office to protect foster youth and victims of sex trafficking. And, anyone who knows Kamala will tell you, she's not one to back away from a just cause or a righteous fight. She digs deep when people's lives and livelihoods are at stake.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are fundamentally good people - honest, moral, pragmatic and principled. That's exactly what we need more of in the White House – and what we need to heal and unite a divided nation.

I will be proud to call Kamala America's Vice President.
