COVID-19 has led to drops in public transit ridership as high as 70 to 90%. This has led to plummeting revenues, meaning that many of our public transportation systems are endangered of being dramatically reduced or even eliminated.
If the current trends are left unchecked, unimaginable impacts like tripled fares could become our new reality, leaving countless people stranded without reliable transportation and unable to get to work.
Sadly, Senate Republicans are blocking transit funding. Their joke of a “relief bill” doesn’t include a single penny for transportation, and
President Trump's unconstitutional executive action doesn't even address transportation funding at all.
That’s why I’m joining with my colleagues to demand at least $32 billion in transit funding in the next COVID-19 relief package. Add your name if you agree that we can’t let our public transportation system be destroyed by Republicans!
If Republicans in Congress continue to fail to take action, many essential workers who we rely on to staff our hospitals, health clinics, grocery stores, post offices, and more will be left without a way to get to work.
Even if the transportation systems are able to survive this cruel Republican attack, they will have less money for deep cleaning and other CDC recommended precautions to slow the virus spread.
In addition, public transit systems employ 435,000 workers directly, and hundreds of thousands more in interconnected industries like construction. The ripple effect of inaction would be catastrophic.
Studies show that our GDP climbs $5 for every dollar we invest in transportation. With our economy in turmoil, we can’t afford any more losses which will take years and years to repair.
Sign here to demand that Republicans stop blocking vital transportation funding!
Thank you for all that you do,
Jerry
