I’ve been thinking a lot about what home really means.

For me, it was the foundation my parents worked so hard to build: a safe
place, a stable place, a place where our family could grow and dream about
something bigger.

But for too many families, that kind of stability is still out of reach.

More than 50 years ago, the Fair Housing Act outlawed discrimination and
expanded access to housing across this country. It promised every American
the opportunity to have a place of their own. Yet, here we are.

Housing is more expensive than ever. Discrimination still exists in ways
both subtle and overt. Too many working families are being priced out of
the same communities they helped to build.

I see it in Maryland all the time. Families doing everything right —
working hard, saving what they can — and still struggling to keep a roof
over their heads. 

When we talk about housing, we’re talking about access to good schools,
safe neighborhoods, and real opportunity. We’re talking about whether the
next generation has a fair shot.

That’s not just an economic issue. It’s a moral one. 

We cannot let the promises made in the Fair Housing Act fall short.

That’s why I’ve worked to make housing more affordable and accessible for
Maryland families: 

* I helped pass the ROAD to Housing Act, increasing housing supply and
making homeownership more affordable.
* Supported the Bipartisan Whole-Home Repairs Act to help low- and
middle-income homeowners stay in their homes.
* Championed the Bipartisan Community Investment and Prosperity Act,
which boosts financing for local housing projects.
* Pushed legislation like the Appraisal Modernization Act and fair
lending protections to fight discriminatory practices that still
persist today.
